January - March 2005
National Sportshall Final NIA, Birmingham, 20th March
7 AVAC athletes were part of the Derbyshire U13 Girls and U15 Boys teams that represented the East Midlands in the annual Sportshall Final.
As usual the very best of the nations young athletes were present and the standard of performances incredibly high. However, for a change, Derbyshire's athletes were more than a match with several medals being won in thrilling competitions.
Josh Cartledge was at last rewarded for his several years of doing sportshall, and marked his last ever competition as an U15 with a superb silver in the highly contested 2 lap sprint, and finished a respectable 16th out of over 80 lads in the individual category. Also competing in the U15 team were Sam Stone and Andrew Szarkowski who helped the team to overall 9th place.
The U13 girls team gave the County its best ever finishing place. Assembled athletes, parents and supporters were astounded as the results countdown gave Derbyshire 3rd place.
Our own girls were amongst the medals with Emma Komocki giving it everything to win a silver in the 4 lap. Emma joined with Claudia Rogers and Alex Turner and Chesterfields Lauretta Curtis to win another silver in the 4 x 2 lap relay. Charlotte Noonan was also a valuable member of the U13 girls team.
Well done to everyone!Tamara for England selection !
English Schools Cross Country Championships – Norwich Saturday 12 March.
5 Amber Valley runners took part in the prestigious English Schools Cross Country Championships in Norwich last Saturday. As is the norm for this event it was an exciting day with the bonus of good weather. In each race there are around 320-340 runners selected from the top 8 in all of the county schools championships.
In
the years 8&9 girls race Tamara Armoush ran her best race of the season
finishing in 7th place which earns her selection to represent England in the
Home Countries Schools international event in Wales on 3rd April (first 8 are
selected and compete against teams from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland).
This makes Tamara the first Amber Valley athlete to be selected for England and
our 2nd to gain international selection (David Feeney has previously been
selected for Scotland at decathlon).
In this race Tamara finished ahead of many of the girls who beat her in the recent ECCA Nationals and inter County events and is the first Derbyshire runner in the top 8 since 1997. Tamara was actually the 3rd year 8 runner on the day confirming what some of us already believed in that she is one of the best distance runners in the country for her age.
Alexandra Turner finished 140th to help the Derbyshire girls to an overall 4th place out of 44 counties.
In
the intermediate girls (years 10 &11) year 10 Leila Armoush improved
significantly on her 8th place in the schools county championships to be the 3rd
Derbyshire runner home in 219th place.
Rob Love also had arguably his best run of the season in the intermediate boys race leading the way as the first Derbyshire runner home in 82nd place. Nathan Ahlfors was the 5th Derbyshire athlete in 147th. Rob and Nathan are both year 10 so have another year in the age group.
Full details can be found here.
Bronze For Tamara and Alex
Consistent cross country high achievers, Tamara Armoush and Alexandra Turner, were part of the Derbyshire U13 girls team who took a bronze medal at the Reebok Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at Wollaton Park.
In one of the biggest events of the cross country calendar, with 200 to 300 runners in each race, Tamara was up with the race leaders for much of the way round (featuring on the Sky TV coverage and this weeks Athletics Weekly magazine) but faded slightly in the closing stages to finish an excellent 10th. Alex, whose form is much improved over recent weeks, came home a very respectable 30th.
Together with their Chesterfield team mates, Emily Fisher and Abby Vernon they were the best performing Derbyshire team on the day.
Another good performance from an AVAC runner was Ben Conner's 41st position in the U13 boys, particularly promising as Ben still has another year left in this age group.
Other AVAC athletes competing on the day across the other age groups were:
Charlotte Noonan 228th
Chris Dawe 143rd
Olivia Pell 210th
Leila Armoush 217th
Rebecca Herring 231st
Samya Armoush 209th
Nathan Ahlfors 89th
Rob Love 113th
Annual Club Cross Country Championships Saturday 19th March
All club members are welcome to take part in the annual club cross country races. The event will take place during a normal Saturday club training session. Training in the sportshall as normal for those not wanting to run.
The races will take place around the fields at Charles Hill and the distances will be appropriate for each age group. The first race will start at approximately 10.45am once the course and marshals are in place.
There are boys and girls races for U9's and U11's with medals for the first 3 club members in each race.
For the first time this year, the race for the older athletes will take the form of a handicap, which should prove entertaining and exciting as there is no foregone winner.
Medal presentations will take place after the finish of the last race. Parents are particularly welcome to stay for the morning to cheer on the runners.
Help is needed to set up the course and to marshal. No experience is necessary but wellies and warm clothing probably is. The races cannot take part without volunteer help.
Course constructors should meet at Charles Hill at around 9am and marshals will be needed around 15minutes before the start of the first race.
Nearly New Sale and Clothing Sales
Also on the morning of the cross country ( Sat 19th March) we are holding the first sale this season of club clothing. There are 3 parts to this:
1. Standard club kit will be available to purchase on the day. This includes club vests, crop tops, sweatshirts, fleeces and girls hot pants (essential for all those competitions coming up). If we don't have your size we can take orders. All club kit is sold at cost price.
2. A local children's clothing company will be bringing stock of non club-branded sportswear such as boys shorts, cycle shorts etc. Worth taking a look for all those general kids sporting needs.
3. Nearly New sale of anything athletics related but outgrown spikes tend to be the most popular.
Sellers - label your items with size, name and price wanted and we'll try to find a buyer. Good condition items only please. Please collect all unsold items at the end of the training session as the club will not store unsold items.
Buyers - we can't guarantee what will be offered for sale but you might be lucky and pick up a little used bargain.
Look out for dates of future sales.

AVAC is a winner!
We are pleased to announce that the club has won the title of East Midlands Junior Club of the Year. This is the first UK Club Awards that have been organised by UK Athletics, intended to recognize and reward clubs, volunteers, officials, coaches and partnerships for their contribution to athletics. As winners we will receive a prize of £500. We are now put forward to a panel which selects the national winners, which are announced at an awards ceremony on 9th April.
All those that are actively involved with the club see this award as recognition of all the good work that has been done over the last 6 years since the club started. From very small and inexperienced beginnings we have produced a vibrant, energetic and successful club. The award is testament to all our wonderful coaches, officials and volunteers who give so much of their time and energy to produce effective, creative and fun training sessions in our very limited facilities.
Our athletes are dedicated, loyal, enthusiastic, and a pleasure to coach and take to competitions. We have a reputation for our strong team spirit, the open and friendly nature of the club regardless of ability, age or experience, the care given to our newest and youngest athletes, and the support and opportunities we do our very best to provide for our higher achieving athletes.
Let's hope that the National Panel recognise these qualities too, come 9th April.

East Midlands Regional Sportshall Final Grantham, 20th Feb 2005
2 Teams go through to Sportshall Finals!
An exciting final as always, with 6 Counties looking to get teams through to qualify for the National Finals. 14 AVAC athletes were in the Derbyshire team but could any Derbyshire team win through to their place in the Finals? After a great competition and a nail-biting wait for the results both the U13 Girls and the U15 boys teams were victorious. The U13 Boys team just missed out and came a close 2nd to the Notts team, whilst the U15 girls team finished in 4th.
The AVAC athletes must have 'clinked' their way back home along the A52 with the amount of medals amassed between them.
Top of the pile were the U13 girls with Emma
Komocki winning the 4 lap and Charlotte Noonan taking 2nd. Alex Turner won the
high jump with a new PB of 1m 40, and came 2nd in the 6 lap. Claudia Rogers
picked up 2 silvers for her 2 lap and standing triple jump, whilst all 4 girls
took home a gold each for their parts in the obstacle relay and 4 x 2 relay
which Derbyshire easily won.
The Derbyshire U13 boys team had strong track events but sadly lost points on some of their weaker field events. Jordan Martin made up a blistering parlaaf team with Kirk Hallam's Edward Richards and earnt himself a silver medal as well in the 4 lap. Michael Feeney also took silver this time in the grueling 6 lap plus a bronze in the standing triple jump. Sam Glenn surprised himself with a bronze in the vertical high jump.
There were silver medals galore for the U15 boys.
Josh Cartledge had an excellent competition to come second in the 'all-rounder'
title, plus silvers in his 2 lap and speed bounce. Andrew Szarkowski earnt
silvers for his 4 lap and triple jump whilst Sam Stone also got a silver medal
for his standing long jump.
Katie Noonan took a well deserved bronze for her shot putt. Apologies for anyone I've missed out, but results were announced thick and fast! Full results will be on the www.sportshall.org.uk website soon.
A huge well done to all our athletes who are also getting noted for their enthusiasm, team spirit and colour coordinated hair and make-up - girls and the boys! Finally a special 'well done' to the funky frog' who inspired everyone. I hope he's booked his seat at the NIA, Birmingham on March 20th!

Final Sportshall match - Chesterfield - 30th January 2005
Our final meet in the current series, with many excellent performances from our team of intrepid athletes!
Hats off to the under 11 girls who managed 9 competing athletes which meant 2 relay teams. A full complement for the under 11 boys also meant a good relay turnout, and victory was ours beating off Chesterfield by 4 points! We think the lollipop bribes were a contributing factor!
As ever, every single performance
contributed to our impressive total score, although we failed to top
Chesterfield's overall first place we were a very close second in all events
apart from our first place.
Special mentions to;
Rory Chambers achieved a P.8 of 10.2 in the U.118 1 lap Charlie Waterhouse continued his impressive form and scored a new record of 6.23 m in the under 11 Standing Triple Jump. He also equaled his own record for the U.1l.B 2 lap.
We can reveal liquorices may be the secret of his success!
Josh Cartledge equaled his own record for the U15.8 2 lap, and with Andrew Szarkowski set a new record for the U15.8 8 lap parlaaf: 1 min 13.
Kelly Jay Payling achieved a personal best at her first attempt at competing in the U.11 Standing triple Jump: 4.95 metres.
If we missed your impressive performance please forgive us as our pencils were going at full speed at all times.
Charlie Waterhouse was voted the best male performance of the season. Well done Charlie a very popular and well deserved choice.
Mini-league Sports Hall final positions:
U11 Girls - Chesterfield 288, Amber Valley 278, Kirk Hallam 68, Derby 0.
U13 Girls - Chesterfield 287, Amber Valley 263, Kirk Hallam 111, Derby 25.

North of England Cross Country Championships - Consett 29th January 2005
Saturday 29th Jan was the day of the North of England Cross Country championships held this year at Consett in County Durham. This meant an early start and long mini-bus journey for most of us with Ricky providing most of the on board entertainment!
The NoE champs are a major event attracting clubs from all over the north. It was a glorious sunny but cool day for the event – ideal running conditions except for the ‘killer’ hill which was a key feature of the course.
Once
again, our star performer was Tamara Armoush in the U13 girls race where she
finished in 2nd place and winning her first (of many I hope) major championship
medal. The race was won by Kate Avery (16 seconds ahead of Tamara) who is
considered by many to be the UK’s top ranked U13 and was recently featured in
Athletics Weekly. For much of the race Tamara was neck and neck and it was great
to see one of our own athletes competing so well at this level.
Alexandra Turner had a superb run to finish 11th with Charlotte Noonan, Leanne Cartledge and Jessica Riley 65th, 73rd and 108th respectively. Overall the girls were 4th team just outside the medals but a really good team effort.
In the U13 boys Ben Connor was on form again finishing 20th with Rory Dickenson close behind (25th). Chris Dawe was 46th with Michael Feeney finishing a brave 121st despite a painful knee problem to ensure a respectable 6th overall team position.
In the U15 boys the ‘on form’ Rob Love lead the way in 28th position with Nathan Ahlfors not far behind at 37th. Matt Selfe who is getting stronger with each race finished 73rd with Ricky Kiggins 83rd. Overall the team was 6th
It is worth noting that the above team performances were the best of any of our local clubs.
The
U15 girls and U17 Women were the only other events where Amber Valley were
represented with the Armoush family once again providing the athletes with Leila
103rd and Samya 94th.
The next event of the Cross Country season is the National Championship in Birmingham on 19th Feb so we have a couple of race free weekends coming up where the endurance squad can actually train at Charles Hill.
Visit the NoE website for full results and some pictures including the ‘killer’ hill.
Sportshall Reminder - Sunday 30th Jan at Queens Park LC, Chesterfield, 1.30pm.
This may be the last competition of the season as the one booked for 20th March may not go ahead, so it's everyone's last chance to have a go.
It's definitely the U13 and U15's last chance to impress the County selectors who will be selecting the teams for the Regional Final (Grantham in Feb) shortly after Sundays comp.
The last few comps have seen a poor turnout from our club in some age groups.
Can all athletes aged 9 - 15 please make a special effort to attend on Sunday.
Programme of events can be found on
www.dcaa.org.uk here.
Coaching Master Class, Saturday February 5th 2005 at Charles Hill, 12.30 – 2.30pm
Lead by Bob Boyd, this session is open to all interested Amber Valley A.C. parents, older athletes and club coaches. Bob will go through technical aspects of events or groups of events (for example throws or jumps). Come along to learn the coaching rights and wrongs, and pick up some tips for yourself, your athletes or your kids.
Bob is open to suggestions for the events to cover. ‘How do I get the best from using blocks? Where should my feet go in discus? etc.
Please suggest an event or area for Bob to cover and he’ll do his best to help. Come prepared to have a go yourself if you want!
Reebok Cross-Challenge, Cardiff Sunday 23rd January
At the Reebok Cross Challenge race on Sunday Tamara Armoush finished 2nd in a field comprising some of the top U13 girl runners in the country. This was particularly impressive having won the Derbyshire Schools championships the day before.
The Reebok Cross Challenge is a series of races intended to provide regular national level competition with the final race combined with the Inter County event at Nottingham on 5th March. Based on her latest performance, Tamara could be in contention for a medal position at Nottingham.
Rob Love also had an excellent run in the U15 boys event, having also raced the day before, finishing in 15 place – his highest yet.
North of England Indoor Championships, Sheffield 22nd/23rd January
David Feeney continued his success at Regional competitions by taking another bronze medal, this time in the U20 mens 60m Hurdles.
Another successful hurdler was Sam Stone who also won bronze in the U17 age group, with a new personal best. This is Sam’s first regional medal, particularly pleasing as it is his first year in a new age group.
Alexandra Turner and Emma Komocki made the finals of the 60m Hurdles where Alex snatched Emma’s existing club record for the event. She also set a new Pb in the 800m.
English Schools Cross Country Finals
Five AVAC athletes have made it through to this years English Schools Cross Country Finals. The County trials held this year at Moorways on Saturday determine the Derbyshire team to go through to the high profile Finals, this year in Norwich on 12th March. The runners on Saturday had to finish in the top 8 to be assured of their place.
Tamara Armoush and Alexandra Turner eased to qualifying by coming first and second respectively in the Junior girls race. Competing in their first year of schools competitions, they were running against girls some of whom were a school year older, which further illustrates their dominance this season of the County cross country scene.
In the Intermediate age group, Rob Love, Nathan Ahlfors and Leila Armoush made it their second times to get through to the Finals, Rob finishing 4th, and Nathan and Leila both finishing 8th in their races, against some tough opposition.
Rory Dickenson (Junior boys) and Olivia Pell (Junior girls) earnt reserve places and will have to wait and see if they are needed to run at the Finals.
Separate Year 7’s races introduce this age group to County Schools although they do not get to compete at the Finals. Chris Dawe, no stranger to cross country, ran impressively to win his race, whilst Charlotte Hobbs and Jessica Riley finished 5th and 7th respectively.
North of England X-Country Championships - Consett
A reminder to those athletes competing at the North of England Cross Country Championships on Sat 29th Jan at Consett.
The minibus will leave Belper Sports centre at 7:30 AM (yes, sorry I really do mean half past seven!). All those who have asked for places on the bus have seats reserved but there are no more left.
Those who are making their own way need to make sure you get there in plenty of time as it will be very busy and you need to allow plenty of time to park and find the rest of the team (look out for the team tent at the 'tented village' which is usually marked on the course map).
Visit www.noeaa-athletics.org.uk for full details including directions and map.
North of England Indoor Combined Events Championships, EIS, Sheffield
David Feeney continued his
successful progress at multi-events by winning a heptathlon bronze medal at the
North of England Indoor Combined Events Championships at The English Institute
of Sport, Sheffield at the weekend.
Competing as an U20 for the first time, he managed PB's in high jump, pole vault and the 1000m, and set pleasing personal records for 60m hurdles and shot putt where hurdle heights and implement weights have increased from U17. This all goes well for his next indoor pentathlon - the AAA's Combined Events Championships in Cardiff in March.
At the same event, gaining valuable multi-event experience were Emma Komocki, Claudia Rogers and Chloe Smith, competing in the U15 pentathlon.
In a field of 29 athletes, medals for the trio were never a realistic possibility, but Emma and Claudia both gained pleasing PB's in 60m hurdles and high jump.
Derbyshire Cross Country Championships – Berry Hill , Mansfield Sat 14th Jan 2005.
It was another good day for our intrepid group of cross country runners, competing at Berry Hill Park for the 2nd time in two weekends. This time it was the Derbyshire Championships and conditions were near perfect in the scenic parklands and woods without the bitter winds of last Saturday.
As well as individual and team titles up for grabs, the runners were competing for places in the Derbyshire teams for the exciting televised Inter-County event in March. Following on from our successes in the North Midlands League we were hoping for our best County Champs yet and we were not disappointed.
First event was the U13 girls 3Km event with Abby Vernon of Chesterfield setting a challenging pace in the early stages. Alex Turner and Tamara Armoush played it cool but kept in contact with Abby and their patience paid off. From half way round our girls took the lead with Tamara just a few metres ahead of Alex until the final uphill section where Alex powered past Tamara and opened up what looked like a telling gap.
However, once she woke up to the threat Tamara fought back and just beat Alex to the finish line. It was good to see an exciting finish and if anyone is going to threaten Tamara’s domination of the local cross-country scene then who better than Alex. Watch out Tamara – there’s a Turner on your tail!
The re-match should be interesting. Charlotte Noonan ran an excellent race to finish in 7th place thus securing the overall team title for our girls with the steadily improving Leanne Cartledge in 10th place in her 1st County championship race. Jessica Riley and Emily Cotteril finished in 13th and 16th positions.
In the U13 boys Ben Conner and Rory Dickenson battled it out over the same 3km course finishing 3rd and 4th with Chris Dawe 9th . This gave us 2nd team position just behind Matlock.
In the U15 girls Olivia Pell and Leila Armoush had good runs over their 4km course with Olivia securing a well deserved county medal finishing 3rd with Leila 6th .
Samya Armoush and Rebecca Herring ran solidly over in the U17 women’s event finishing in 6th and 7th place.
In
the U15 boys 4.5 km race there was another exciting battle between Amber Valley
team mates Nathan Ahlfors and Rob Love. Nathan took the lead from just before
half way from Tom Lawrence of Derby with Rob snapping at his heels for the
remainder of the race. Nathan did enough to keep his lead but was under constant
pressure from Rob – another 1st/2nd double for Amber Valley but with only 5
seconds separating the first 3 runners.
Ricky Kiggins had another gutsy run to secure 1st team place just ahead of Derby AC by finishing 12th in what was a very competitive field. Matt Selfe also ran well finishing 15th .
(Amer and I also had a plod around the 10km mens course but all we ended up with was a warm glow of satisfaction and aching legs ! - Jim)
In total our medal haul was:-
2 gold (Tamara, Nathan)
2 silver (Alex, Rob)
2 bronze
2 teams golds (U13 girls, U15 boys)
1 team silver (U13 boys)
We have 11 athletes selected for county representation and 3 with reserve places.
Well done to all involved.
Sportshall Match 4 - 9th January 2005
Another exciting competition at Queen's Park
Leisure Centre with Amber Valley athletes performing well. Once again though
Chesterfield had the advantage, we could only make up 2 relay teams losing out
on points and several events did not have a scoring athlete.
Best performance goes to Andrew Szarkowski who set a convincing new record for
the U15B 4 Lap of 36.6sec. Other records are in the grasp of AVAC athletes as
well. Emma Komocki missed out on the 2 Lap record by 0.1sec, Charlie Waterhouse
is closing in on the speed bounce record for U11B and Josh Cartledge is 1 bounce
away form the U15B record.
Our biggest team was the U11 girls who are still in with a chance of team trophy
- 6 points behind Chesterfield at the end of play.
Full results and details of the next match on 30.01.05 can be found on
www.dcaa.org.uk.
Thank you to all those who attended and well done to all those who competed
North Midland Cross Country
League Match 4, Berry Hill Park, Mansfield
Saturday 8th Jan 05
It’s Gold for Tamara and Nathan, and 2 team trophies for the club!
AVAC’s
young athletes have come away from this seasons concluding races with their best
individual and team performances ever. The final races in the North Mids Cross
Country League are always eagerly awaited, as these decide the final team and
individual placings for the season. AVAC athletes ran with determination and
spirit, having to contend with very strong icy winds despite the brilliant
sunshine at Berry Hill Park. The league itself has been going for an amazing 60
years, but in only AVAC’s fifth year of entering teams its’ strongest team so
far has emerged.
The U13 boys team were the first to taste victory. As usual Ben Conner and Rory
Dickenson ran neck and neck around the 3K course, taking the race out to
previous
race
winner and hot favourite Josh Moody from Matlock AC.
In the closing stages all 3 lads were still
together but Rory proved the stronger this time to edge Ben into 2nd, and Moody
in 3rd . Team-mate Chris Dawe wasn’t far behind in 6th place, Michael Feeney in
16th and Nick Rowton in 27th. This gave them overall 1st team place trophy, with
Ben taking the overall silver medal place in the individual competition.
Tamara Armoush ran with her usual attacking front-running style
that
guaranteed her 1st place on the day, and the trophy for overall individual in
the U13 girls age group.
There was a pleasing 5th place on the day from
Alex Turner, with Leanne Cartledge in 20th, Jessica Riley 22nd and Emily
Cotterill 28th. Overall the girls team finished in 3rd team place.
The clubs second team trophy of the day went to the U15 boys team. Going into
the final race they had a slender 8 point lead over Mansfield Harriers, and some
frantic calculations by the amassed parents and coaches still left it in doubt
as to which club would take the trophy home with them.
Rob Love left his best performance in this league to last as he powered home to a fine 2nd place. His team-mates Nathan Ahlfors and Ricky Kiggins, both who were not really race fit due to recent illness and injuries, finished 5th and 16th respectively, and the improving Matt Selfe had his best run to come home in 17th.
Overall though, they did enough to beat
Mansfield, with Derby 3rd. Nathan’s reward for consistent quality running across
all four races gave him the overall individual 1st-place trophy, with Rob taking
overall 3rd place.
In the U15 girls age group, Olivia Pell and Leila Armoush were our only
competitors throughout the season, Olivia finishing 15th on the day and Leila
25th.
The U11’s fun run again saw William Dennis take first place. Although there is
no trophy for the U11’s William would undoubtedly have won it if there had have
been one! You can’t get better than winning each of the 4 races.
Likewise, Jessica Turner crossed the line 1st
girl, with Tara Ward close on her heels for 2nd girl, and Sam Turner 5th boy.
Sportshall Match 4
This will take place this Sunday the 9th January - don't forget!
Sportshall Match 3, 19th December
Another exciting competition with fast paced action.
Amber Valley athletes had some excellent individual performances but lack of
numbers to make up relay teams meant that we couldn't match Chesterfield and
they remain in the lead overall.
U15 boys lead in their group and U11 girls are just 2 points behind
Chesterfield. Both teams are in with a good chance of best team awards.
It was a good day for records. Emma Komocki and Alex Turner got a new record for
the 8 lap parlauf of 1.20.2. Alex then went on to match the vertical high jump
record. Andrew Szarkowski equaled the 4 lap record of 37.0 and Josh Cartledge
was consistent in matching his own 2 lap record.
There were many new PBs as well, Andrew Szarkowski added 32cm to his Standing
Triple Jump PB and Claudia Rogers increased hers by 60cm.
Well done to all those who took part and thank-you for coming along to support
your club so near to Christmas.
