July - September 2003
AVAC Fun Day a great success!! Over 100 people enjoyed the recent AVAC
‘Bring a friend’ Fun Day at Charles Hill on the 20th September and raised over
£320 for AVAC. Club members were spotted getting soaking
wet in the water balloon competition (and some of the coaches suffered this as
well!), covered in raw eggs in another madcap competition orchestrated by Mike
Rogers, and taking part in a Grand tug ‘o’ war. There were numerous stalls manned
throughout the day offering cakes, make your own biscuits, tombola and a BBQ.
Head coach Bob Boyd also brought along his electronic timing equipment and batak
board to test the reaction times of the athletes. Thanks to the organising committee of
Paul Noonan, Carole Eagle and Mike Rogers as well as all the other willing
volunteers on the day. Special thanks to TESCO and Warburtons for their help in
keeping the BBQ well stocked, and Nigel Smith & Louise Komocki for their
generous cash donations.
UKA Shine Awards The recreation group of athletes have
this week commenced recording their individual performances in different events,
so they can work towards one of the UKA Shine awards. Over an eight week period all athletes
will practice and be measured on a wide variety of events, resulting in an Award
being given at the end of each eight week cycle. For athletes to achieve the
Gold standard they will have to perform well across a wide range of events. More details of the shine awards can be
found by clicking
here.
Amber Valley AC Athletes to represent County. Seven Club athletes have been selected to
represent Derbyshire at the annual Inter-counties match at Sutton Coldfield on
6th September. Selection was based on performances at the County Championships
in May and the 4 Mini-League matches, with other squad places taken by athletes
from Derby, Chesterfield and Burton AC athletes. Congratulations to Alexandra Turner,
Chloe Smith, Michael Feeney, Jordan Martin and Gareth Griffith (All U13), and
Abby Wood and Louise Feeney (Both U15).
National Young Athletes League 2003 PROMOTION TO DIV 1! After the fourth and final fixture in
this league we can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that we totally dominated
this league. This has been our first season in the NYAL, coinciding with its’
first season as a joint male / female league, and the first season supported by
UK Athletics. We took first place in each of the four
fixtures in Div 2, giving us a maximum possible points tally of 24! This gives
us promotion to Div 1 East next year where the format is slightly different. We
will compete against different clubs in each of the 4 fixtures – more
interesting, better standard of competition and much less predictable! We will
also be in the same league as our local rivals and friends Derby AC. The girls U13’s team deserves a special
mention as they kept their 100% win record up until the last fixture at Rugby.
They had taken first place in both the A and B races / field events in every
event! Quite an achievement. However, holiday absences meant this couldn’t quite
be maintained to the end. Well done girls. Those of us who have Team Managed over
these competitions have all been delighted at all the athletes’ behaviour,
enthusiasm and team spirit. That team spirit is often commented on by parents
and officials from other clubs, and it’s great to be a part of such a friendly
and supportive group.
Derbyshire Mini League 2003 Match 4 and Round
Up. The Club retained its’ Mini League title
this weekend by winning the last of the 4 fixtures at Moorways, and thereby
taking the winners trophy for a second year! Some solid performances from the U11’s,
U13’s, and U15’s gave us victory over Derby, Chesterfield and Kirk Hallam AC‘s.
Many young athletes have had their first tastes of track competition and enjoyed
the friendly, informal, but competitive features of the Mini League. Several of our athletes have been
selected for the County Squad for the annual Inter-Counties Match, see above for
details. Special mentions go to Emma Komocki who
was awarded female Athlete of the Match for her almost Grade 1 performance in
the U13 70 Hurdles, Abby Wood who set another new U15 Shot record of 9.75m and
Alex Lau who won the U11 Turbo Javelin, but just missed out by around 1m on
setting a new league record.
Report on the Tamworth Open, Bank Holiday
Monday Aug 25th Around 20 club athletes competed at this
annual Open where excellent organisation, medals and electronic timing usually
attracts a large number of quality entries. With over 40 athletes in some of the
events it was always going to be difficult to get medallists but this was
achieved by 7 of our athletes who went home with a clutch of silvers and
bronzes. Abby Wood (pictured), improving with
every competition, took silver with a PB and new club record in the U15 shot,
whilst Yvette Bowler was delighted to earn bronze in the U13 shot with, again, a
PB and a new club record. Richard Szarkowski took a bronze in the U17 javelin.
Hurdles medals came from David Feeney
with a bronze in the U17 400m Hurdles and a silver in the 100m Hurdles. Brother
Michael earnt silver in his U13 80m event, and sister Louise missed out on a
bronze by the tiniest of margins – 0.06 on the electronic timing, in a quality
75m U15 final. Three U13 girls made it into the 70m final with Emma Komocki
having an excellent run to take the silver medal, whilst Alexandra Turner and
Claudia Rogers ran well to take 6th and 7th places in a
very close race. Alexandra earnt a silver medal in the U13 800m. Despite
dominating and winning her heat she had to be content with second place as a
result of the time trial over 2 heats.
Track & Field Mini League Match 3 Saturday 26th
July 2003 AVAC put in a strong performance at the
3rd Track & Field Mini League match of 2003, just being edged into second place
overall behind Chesterfield AC. Special mention to the U11 Girls 4 x 100m
Relay team for their winning performance, Emma Komocki for her hurdling in the
U13 70MH and Abby Wood for her fantastic 19.24m winning throw in the U15 Discus. Chris Dawe ran a superb 600M for the U11
Boys coming home in 2.01.5. Also congratulations to Jordan Martin who was edged
into second in the U13 200M despite a good time of 29.7. Use the links below to browse the rest of the News Archives:
