Amber Valley Athletic Club

Amber Valley AC - runner-up UK Athletics National Awards, Club of the Year 2007

July - September 2005

Derbyshire Sportshall Mini League 2005-2006

We are now half way through the competition and chasing Chesterfield overall by just 9 points. It's getting very exciting and with a good turn out for the next three matches we have every chance of bringing home the trophy. Amber Valley lead in U11 boys and in all the girls' age groups - fantastic!

The record tables are changing at every competition and Amber Valley athletes clearly have their sights set on achieving a few more before the end of the competition.

In match 1, Jessica Turner equaled the U11G 2 Lap record set by Chloe Smith and sister Alex. In match 2, Jessica set a new record for the 3-Lap of 30.7sec. (a record also previously held by her sister).

The U15G relay team were determined to set a new relay record and succeeded in doing so in match 1 despite feeling tired after the Grimsby Open. And so in match 2 they decided to secure their victory and knocked another second off their record! (Claudia Rogers, Emma Komocki, Chloe Smith, Alex Turner).

Match 3 saw the U13B 8 Lap Par record equaled by Charlie Waterhouse and Michael Bosworth. Match 6 will give them the opportunity to improve on this.

Thank you and well done to all those who come along and compete. If you haven't already been to a Sportshall competition, you don't know what you're missing!

Full results, records and details of forthcoming matches can be found at www.dcaa.org.uk

Sportshall Athletics Mini League match 3 Sunday 31st Oct

A reminder that the next Sportshall Athletics competition in the Mini League series is on Sunday. We still need lots more of you to take part, even if you haven't done so yet this season. We need to try to claw back some of the overall lead that Chesterfield AC have, and keep hold of those 1st place age group categories that we already lead.

In particular there are many U13 boys and girls who would stand a strong chance of being selected for the Derbyshire squad IF THEY TURNED UP AND TOOK PART!! The Regional match at Grantham is so exciting - what a shame to miss your chance of being in it!

No need to book. Just turn up to Queens Park Leisure Centre, Chesterfield at 1pm for a 1.30pm start. Wear your club vest or T-shirt, pay £2, and take your pick of 3 events plus a relay. Open to all athletes aged 9 - 15.

Derbyshire Mini-League Cross Country - Event no 1, Charles Hill 22nd Oct.

Amber Valley AC runners got off to a blistering start at last Saturdays first Derbyshire mini-league cross country event hosted by the Club at Charles Hill. We were treated to a mild and bright morning but the rain over the last couple of days meant it was a 'real' cross country event with a bit of mud as a taster for races to come later in the season. As current League champions and on home ground we expected to do well and the athletes did not disappoint with Amber Valley winning 5 out of the 6 age group events and establishing a massive overall lead over other local Derbyshire clubs.

Individual Amber Valley runners were first home in the U11 girls (Jessica Turner with Jennie Lockwood in 2nd place), U11 boys ( Andrew Fenwick with Luke Turner 2nd), U13 boys (Ben Conner). In the U15 girls Amber Valley had a clean sweep with Tamara Armoush 1st, Alex Turner 2nd and Olivier Pell 3rd - it doesn't get much better than that! In the U13 girls race 2nd and 3rd places went to Leanne Cartledge and Lori Marshall and Rory Dickenson was 3rd in the U15 boys.

In total 27 Amber Valley runners took part but several more of you could have done so. There are 2 further races in this particular league and plenty of other opportunities (see fixture list on the notice board, newsletter and website) so come and have a go.

Finally, a big thank you to all of those athletes and parents/coaches who helped to make the day a success by setting up the excellent course, marshalling and sorting out refreshments. These events don't happen without that kind of support. Well done.

North Midlands Cross Country League Match 1, Markeaton Park, Derby,15th October 2005

AVAC got off to a sizzling start in the first main cross country competition of the season. A total of 27 runners from the club of all ages tackled the course in unseasonably mild conditions, set against the backdrop of Markeaton Park's beautiful autumnal colours. Already it looks like the size of the fields in most of the younger age groups are up on previous years, and several AVAC runners were competing in their first cross country competition for the club.

The first race of the day, the U15 girls (a very high standard this year), saw Tamara Armoush striding home to first place, obviously determined to start where she left off at the end of last season (she won the leagues overall U13 girls title in January). Moving up an age group appears not to have troubled her as she piled on the pressure in the leading pack, before making a significant break on the famous Markeaton Park hills. Tamara has to be the favourite for the overall league title.

Giving her great support for the team points were Alexandra Turner in 9th, and Olivia Pell in 14th. This has given them a total of 24 points which puts them in 2nd place, sandwiched between the strong teams from Kettering and Lincoln Wellington. With only 4 points between the first three teams this should be an exciting age group and our girls have every chance of being up there battling for the title over the next three races.

In the U13 boys our star of the Great North Run, Ben Conner showed no mercy to the rest of the field and simply ran away from them to a very convincing win (his first North Mids League victory) and like Tamara has to be favourite for the overall title this year. Very strong performances from Chris Dawe (6th) and Michael Bosworth (11th) put the team firmly in the lead 7 points ahead of nearest rivals (Nene Valley). William Dennis in his first U13 cross country event finished a creditable 29th.

Unfortunately, the combined U15 boys/U17 girls event was a bit of an organisational disaster with a mix up over the number of laps with the results being declared void. Leila Armoush, Rory Dickenson, Michael Feeney and Nicholas Rowton all featured and looked to have been running well.

Rob Love and Matt Selfe ran well to finish in 8th and 29th place respectively in the U17 mens race, but without a third team member will find it hard to figure in the overall team event.

The U13 girls packed well to finish in 2nd team place overall. Leanne Cartledge came home in an excellent 6th place, closely followed by Lori Marshall, in her first cross country outing for the club, finishing in a creditable 9th place. Jessica Riley crossed the line in 18th with Roseanne Pell in 22nd, both girls finishing in the top half of the field.

The U11's race saw a record number of 57 youngsters charging round the their course. With the leaders only taking a little over 3 minutes to complete, there was hardly time for the spectators to jog from the start to the finish! As expected, Jessica Turner was always in the leading bunch, finishing first girl, third place overall and only 3 seconds behind the winning boy!

Forthcoming Cross Country

The first of this seasons cross country races are coming up soon. On Saturday 15th October there is the first of 4 fixtures in the North Midlands Cross Country League, hosted by Derby AC at Markeaton Park, Derby. First races start at 1pm, with races for all age groups, including U11's and veterans, in quick succession throughout the afternoon.

Start times and results can be found on www.northmidsxcleague.co.uk. All athletes should meet the rest of the team at least 45 minutes before the start of your race. Start and finish areas are usually located close to the main car park off the Markeaton island - remember that the car park is 'pay and display'.

A week later sees the start of the Derbyshire Mini League cross country series of 3 fixtures. This first one is being hosted by AVAC at our training base at Charles Hill on Saturday 22nd October. All athletes in U11, U13 and U15 age groups can run, and there is even a fun run for U9's.

The first race starts at 11am and goes through to around 12.30pm. Normal training for non-runners is still taking place in the sportshall. Any offers by parents to help set up the course (from 9.30am) and marshall the course are urgently needed.

Please see Jim Feeney at training if you can help. Further details and results will be on www.dcaa.org.uk.

Latest running group training plans

Click here to download the latest training plans. Don't forget to add any other work athletes do so this can act as a personal plan with the running group session as a baseline. This includes and hurdles work or indoor comps some may be doing - its all part of the training load.

I am happy to discus overall load with anyone individually.

Tesco Sports Vouchers

Do you shop at Tesco? They are giving vouchers for sports equipment and we at AVAC are collecting in the hope of getting some free equipment to benefit our athletes (and win a visit from Paula Radcliffe??). So, don't give vouchers to a school - get them in the collection box at training NOW!

Sportshall Athletics

The next Derbyshire Mini League match is on Sunday 9th October at Queens Park Leisure Centre, Chesterfield. Meet team managers at 1pm for a 1.30pm start. Any club member can take part provided they are aged 9 on the day and up to present school year 10. £2 payable on the day.

Remember that not only are you helping your club in the team competition you are also trying to prove yourself to the County team selectors when it comes to getting together a team of U13 and U15's for the fantastic Regional Final in February.

Club Track and Field Champs - Sunday 18th September

A total of 35 Amber Valley athletes (mainly girls - disappointing turnout from the lads!) took part in the annual club Track& Field Championships held in conjunction with our friends at Chesterfield AC. It was good to see lots of supportive parents there with lots of willing help for officiating - thanks to all those who pitched in.

The weather was overcast but at least it stayed dry and mild and it was a very enjoyable and sociable end (almost) to the season. Unfortunately the old cinder track at Chesterfield has seen better days so it was not a day for PB's but there was plenty of friendly competition and some of the overall results were very close:

Download Boys results

Download Girls results

Lots of video footage was taken by Amer which we will show at the Awards Evening in November.

Thanks once again to Frank Gorman of Chesterfield AC for organising the event and inviting us along.

Don't forget that the last chance for a PB this season is this Saturdays open event at Grimsby (entry forms have been available at training) and you can still enter on the day. Its a great event and we usually all end up on the Cleethorpes sea front for fish & chips!

All athletes had to perform a throw, jump and tack event of their choice with points allocated from standard performance tables. The Individual winners based on total points score were:-

U11 boys Rory Chambers
U11 girls Jessica Turner
U13 boys Michael Bosworth
U13 girls Charlotte Hobbs
U15 girls Chloe Smith
U15 boys Shaun Rathbone
U17 men Nathan Ahlfors
U17 Women Louise Feeney

Good Performances at English Schools

Three AVAC athletes made the long trip to Southampton this weekend (17 / 18th Sept) for the English Schools Combined Events Finals. This is the annual event where around 200 of the country's best 'all rounders' battle it out for the prestigious titles on offer. David Feeney and Richard Szarkowski represented Derbyshire in the Senior Boys Decathlon, and Ricky Kiggins did likewise in the Intermediate Boys Octathlon.

David finished an excellent 9th place, just 4 points short of the highly desirable 6000 points. In this highly competitive and physically demanding event he was, at one point, in 5th place. His overall points total was a huge PB and he also set PB's in 5 of the 10 disciplines. Given that 5 of the competitors above him had already earned England vests, and still with another year in this age group, David showed that he is (and has been over the last 2 years) consistently amongst the Top 10 multi-eventers for his age in the country.

Richard had an excellent weekend of competition. After a shaky first day, an excellent second day saw him set 4 PB's and claw his way up from 22nd to 15th place out of 32 starters. Like David, Richard also has another year as a Senior.

Ricky was part of the successful Inter Boys team that finished in bronze position for Derbyshire. He set 5 new PB's including his overall points score.

AVAC athlete wins Great North Run!

12 year old Ben Conner took part in this weekends Great North Run, and no doubt surprised himself, and everyone at the club, by winning the 10 to 12 year olds race! With some 3000 entrants in Bens race alone this was an astounding piece of running.

He even got interviewed for TV! Well done Ben!

Heart of England League Win Confirmed

With final results now in we have, indeed, won Div 1 of the Heart of England League. Being the top division in this league this is a significant step for our young club. Last year we finished 5th, the three previous seasons we were in Div 2 doing very well but with no U17's could not push for promotion.

This year we beat Solihull, Tamworth, and Rugby and Northampton, clubs that are in a higher division of the Young Athletes League. Well done to every single athlete who competed in the three matches.

The age group breakdown is as follows:

Males

U13 4th

U15 4th

U17 2nd

Overall 4th

Females

U13 2nd

U15 1st

U17 / Sen Women 7th

Overall 2nd

U11's

Girls 5th

Boys 4th

Overall 4th

Jessica Turner Silver medal for 600m

Rory Chambers Equal silver medal for 75m, and bronze for Long Jump

Important notice for all Thursday endurance group runners

Following this weeks session at Shipley Park we have decided that as from next Thursday (22nd September) we will revert to Belper. This is 1 week earlier than we had planned but due to failing light we can no longer carry out the sessions safely at Shipley Park.

Meet as usual at 7:00 pm in the car park at Belper Sports centre. Please download the attached for more information. Don't forget to dress as appropriate for the weather and reflective bibs will be provided. Any additional parents who are prepared to help will be very welcome.

Please call Jim (01773-880228) if you have any questions.

Boys, Where are You?

All club members should know by now that it's the annual Club Championships on Sunday 18th Sept at Chesterfield AC's training annex (next to Queens Park LC). The girls entries are looking quite healthy but the boys is a different matter.

So far we only have 1 boy entered U11, 2 entered for U13, 3 entered for U15, and 1 entered for U17 - pathetic! Where are all our boys? Don't pass up this opportunity for a trophy or medal, lads. Let's get lots more of you entering to make it a really good competition in all age groups.

Entry forms are still available from training or can be downloaded from this site.

Simply hand them in to training with your £2 entry fee by Saturday at the latest.

Heart of England League - We think we've won!

Results of Sundays match at Rugby have been received and the results on the day are as follows (all out of 8 clubs):

U13 Boys 5th

U15 Boys 3rd

U17 Men 5th

Males total 6th

U13 Girls 1st

U15 Girls 1st

U17 / W 6th

Females total 1st equal

Males and Females combined 3rd equal

Unfortunately we have not yet received the overall team scores for all 3 matches. A phone call to the league organiser and some of our own calculations indicate that we have indeed won overall, and we understand that there is a perpetual trophy for this. However, we think there are also trophies for overall male and female teams but it looks like we have won neither of these.

We also think that there are also now perpetual trophies for each age group winner and that calculations show that our U15 girls have won this. Frustratingly, this is all we can go on at the moment until we receive full details from the league organisers, and a trophy or two to put in our cabinet!

Further to the earlier web report, congratulations should go to the following athletes for their splendid contributions:

Louise Griffith 1st 'B' U13 100m

U13 Girls 4 x 100m relay 2nd

Chloe Smith and Beth Collick, 1st 'A' and 'B' U15 shot

U15 Girls 4 x 100m relay 1st

Ben Conner 1st 'A' U13 1500m

Phil Hardwick 2nd 'A' U15 discus

Sam Stone 2nd 'A' and Ricky Kiggins 1st 'B' U17 100m hurdles

Edward Wesson and Shaun Rathbone did indeed win their respective 200m's!

AVAC Athletes Contribute to County Success

Fifteen club athletes were selected to represent Derbyshire in the annual Inter-Counties for U13 and U15's, this year hosted by Lincolnshire. In awful weather conditions, they helped the Derbyshire team (which was selected from Mini League and County Championships performances) to an excellent 2nd place overall.

Full results should be on www.dcaa.org.uk soon.

Well done to Charlotte Hobbs, Leanne Cartledge, Emma Komocki, Claudia Rogers, Bethany Collick, Alexandra Turner, Tamara Armoush, Chloe Smith, Ben Conner, Edward Wesson, Tom Boyd, Shaun Rathbone, Tom Mayer, Rory Dickinson and Chris Dawe (sadly ill on the day).

New Website for Cross Country League

The North Midlands Cross Country League has at last got it's own website and you can find it on www.northmidsxcleague.co.uk . It's an interesting and useful mix of past history, rules, results, dates and it also gives details of the new race order for this winters season.

Grimsby Open Saturday 24th Sept

This is the very last track and field competition of the season, so worth a last chance to go for a good performance. We usually get quite a good number of AVAC families going so it's a bit of a social occasion too. As it's an 'Open' anyone can enter (U11's through to Vets) so you are not 'selected' for this one. Trophies for top 3 in each event.

Entry forms and directions are available from the desk at training now but be quick because the closing date is 14th Sept. Entries can be made on the day but successful athletes are ineligible for trophies.

Important News About Tuesday Training Sessions

All athletes and parents are reminded that as from Tuesday 20th Sept, winter training times commence. Full information is currently being given out at training (also see the earlier web report below). There are 2 sessions on Tuesdays. The 7 - 8pm slot is for all athletes who have been in the U13 age group this track and field season.

The 8 - 9pm slot is for athletes who have been an U15 upwards this track and field season. Both will be strength and fitness sessions and are unsuitable for the majority of those still at primary school. With numbers attending across all our age groups being at an anticipated all-time high, we have had no choice but to move the Recreation Group's training session to Wednesdays 7 - 8pm still at Charles Hill.

This session is for any new child who is currently of primary school age, and any child who has been training in the Rec Group over the summer months.

There will be the occasional exception to this for a handful of youngsters who have been with the club for a while and are known by the coaches to be capable of the conditioning work to be done on Tuesdays.

Club Championships Reminder Sunday 18th Sept, Chesterfield AC's training track

Entry forms for this annual end of season event are available from training and to download here. Please get your entries in NOW. There are no entries on the day! This is an informal and fun end to the season but with the incentive of trophies and medals to the top 3 in each age group.

Heart of England League, Match 3, Rugby, 4th September

We all have to wait a few days now to find out if our team performances at this match have been collectively good enough to hold onto the first place position. It was clear that all clubs present had, once again, pulled out all the stops to field full teams, with all lanes being used in most races and A and B competitors in most of the field events. It will be very tight between ourselves and Stratford, Solihull and Tamworth.

Full team results are expected by the end of the week and will be displayed on this site. At the time of leaving the venue only around half of the days results had been posted so this report can only mention those earlier events. As usual, our athletes gave of their very best in the relentlessly hot sun, and were a credit to themselves and the club. Also thank you to all our officials, team managers and helpers.

As to the match itself, there were many good performances, with athletes still continuing to achieve pb's and club records. Some of the star performances came from the following athletes.

Tamara Armoush and Olivia Pell got the day off to a good start by taking A and B wins in the U15 girls 1500m, Tamara increasing her existing club record and Olivia setting a new PB. Another A and B win came in the girls U15 800m by Alexandra Turner and Charlotte Noonan. Charlotte Hobbs had an outstanding day by taking first place in the 100m and 2nd in the 200m. She also had an unexpected victory in the 800m where she tore through the field with 300m to go in a fine piece of middle distance running. Team mate Amber Wilde earnt maximum points by finishing first in the B string. Chloe Smith won both her B string discus and 200m.

Shaun Rathbone had two very close fought sprints. He won the 100m by the width of his vest and we are still waiting to hear whether he made it another first in his 200m which was again very very close. Newcomer Edward Wesson, in only his second competition for the club, easily won his U13 100m. At last weekend's Mini League match (Edward's first club competition) he smashed the club's longest standing record, held since 2000 (the clubs first competitive season) by Adam Hackett for the U13 boys shot. His 9m-plus throw at Rugby increased this new record and gave him a second place, and we are waiting for confirmation on his 200m race which could have been another first place.

At U11, Jessica Turner and Rory Chambers, both in with chances of taking an individual medal, will have to wait and see where their performances leave then in the overall rankings after the 3 fixtures. Jessica suffered un unusual defeat in the 600m and Rory had to be content with a PB for 3rd place.

Mini League

Don't forget the Mini League at Moorways this weekend (27th August).

It is open to all U11, U13 & U15's. No training at Charles Hill on this day.

Heart of England venue confirmed.

The above fixture is confirmed as taking place at Rugby athletic club on 4th September.

If you require any further information please see one of the coaches at training or email us.

Winter training times.

Following recent discussions regarding training through the winter the following times and groups have been chosen:

Tuesday 7 – 8pm Conditioning for U13’s and selected U11’s (present age groups apply)

Tuesday 8 – 9pm Conditioning for U15’s upwards.

Wednesday 7 – 8pm Rec Group session (sportshall, Shine Awards, technique and skills etc.

Last seasons winter training sessions were very well attended, so much so that towards the end of the winter is was becoming a little tricky to ensure all athletes could make the most of the training time available to them and participate in a safe environment.

The Club has continued to grow throughout the summer and we are expecting another busy winter! With this in mind you will notice that the recreation group is to be moved to a Wednesday evening and the other session split into two groups on a Tuesday.

If you are unsure as to which group you should attend when the winter programme is introduced on Tuesday 20th September please speak to one of the coaches or email us.

Young Athletes League match 5   Moorways, 31st July

After many, many runs, jumps and throws throughout the 5 matches in this league, involving around 60 of our athletes, AVAC finishes in 4th place in Midlands Div 1East, out of 17 clubs. The top 2 teams gain promotion to the Premier Div (Grantham and Telford).

We finished the league on the same number of league points as Derby in 3rd place, but we finish in 4th due to amassing only 56 match points less than them. We won 4 out of the 5 matches, Derby won only 3, and we were the only team to beat Telford.  To finish 4th is excellent (last year we were 7th) and we can look forward to an even stronger season in 2006 where we predict that we will have our strongest squad yet.

As to the day itself, AVAC were convincing winners against Nuneaton, OWLS and Retford. Leanne Cartledge won female Athlete of the Match for her 1200m performance.

Thank you to all our team managers, officials and parents who helped officiate.

Full results are on the YAL website (go to League Tables and follow Midlands Div 1 East).

Note to all athletes

Those of you who have achieved Grade 2+ performances are strongly advised to check the YAL website's Age Group Rankings page. Many of you will figure highly in these rankings so you should submit your own times and distances to get yourself in them. You can do this quite easily on-line (just make sure you did the performance at a YAL match and not any other competition) and see how you've done compared to others throughout the country.

Mini league match on 24 July

Excellent weather conditions and a good turnout for the third mini league match this season. Overall, AVAC won by 1 point over Chesterfield and hold their first position in the league.   Ben Connor (U13B) was awarded Athlete of the Match with a Grade 1 performance in 800m. His time of 2.20.8s improved his own club record and will be hard to match.

Claudia Rogers (U15G) set a new club record for the 200m of 27.2s and Sean Rathbone equaled the U15b 200m record of 24.8s.   It was an exciting match with some close races and several Grade 2 performances by our athletes. Well done to all those who competed. Full results can be found at www.dcaa.org.uk.

Remember, there is only one match left for this track and field season. All Club members (U11 to U15) should come along and compete, have fun and share in the achievements of your fellow athletes and the Club. If you're not sure about what is involved, ask your coach for more information.

Young Athletes League, Match 4 Harvey Hadden, Nottingham, 17th July

In yet more scorching weather, AVAC were easy winners of this match. As in some of the previous competitions, the opposition could not field full teams, leaving some of our athletes to run on their own or with only one other competitor. Thank goodness it was a double-header to give the stadium some life and atmosphere!

The win, however, still leaves us in 4th place overall - on the same number of league points as Derby AC but with a lower match point total.

There were too many first places to mention everybody, but Claudia Rogers, Chloe Smith and Andrew Szarkowski were winners of the coveted 'Athlete of the Match' T-shirts. Charlotte Hobbs continued her mission to re-write the U13 girls sprint records by adding the 150m to the list and narrowly missing the 75m record.

Abby Wood dominated all 3 throw events by winning the U17 shot, discus and javelin, and Rob Love set a new records in the U17 3000m and 1500m steeplechase - pictured above.

Finally, a new event was added towards the end of the programme at which the U13 boys team excelled! The 'water jump aquatic' event attracted a large and appreciative crowd of onlookers as certain boys achieved Grade 1's for style and artistic interpretation, particularly during the syncronised jumping event!

Jessica Turner heads the U11 girls 600m rankings and Rory Chambers does the same with the boys Long Jump and second in the 75m. The top 3 after match 3 receive medals so it's looking good for our dynamic duo. The 1st placed gender / age group also receive trophies so a couple of these are looking possible too.

Further club records fell to those reported earlier. Charlotte Hobbs won the U13 girls 200m in a new club record, as did Nathan Ahlfors in the U17 1500m.

Well done to every single athlete! It was an excellent days athletics - we just have to finish the job at Match 3 on September 4th.'

Heart of England League, Match 2 Tamworth, 10th July 2005

The second match in this league saw an impressive standard of athlete across the 8 competing clubs. Going into the match AVAC was in 2nd place overall, with a pleasing full-strength side set to keep the pressure on. The club records and Pb's continue to keep coming.

In temperatures surely up in the late 20's, conditions were hot and sticky but this didn't trouble young Jessica Turner who romped ahead of the large field in the U11's 600m to break her own club record. Comparisons have to be made to older sister, Alex, she also having won her 800m easily despite having had a busy and successful weekend at English Schools.

Another easy victory came from Tamara Armoush in the U15 1500m while club mate Olivia Pell came first for the B string. Also in the 1500m Nathan Ahlfors, in his first race coming back from injury, won the U17 mens event.

Leanne Cartledge and Rob Love had to be content with 2nd places in closely fought 1200m and 800m respectively, resulting in Pb's for both. Charlotte Hobbs stormed to victory in the U13 200m, Sam Stone just pipped his rival on the line in the U17 100mH.

Emma Komocki and Claudia Rogers did another double act winning A and B U15 75m hurdles and young Rory Chambers won the U11 long jump in a nail-biting tit-for-tat competition.

The U15 girls 4 x 100m 52.9 time breaks the existing record stood since 2002 - well done to Emma Komocki, Claudia Rogers, Chloe Smith and Alexandra Turner.

Well Done Alex!

This weekend (8 / 9th July) saw the national competition that everyone wants to get to - the English Schools Finals! Four AVAC athletes were selected. Abby Wood (shot), Emma Komocki (hurdles) and Tamara Armoush (1500m) all competed but failed to progress further than the opening rounds, despite giving their all.

Alexandra Turner, however, qualified for the final of the Junior Girls 800m by running a PB, then, the following day finished a wonderful 4th place in that final, running another 2 seconds quicker. This is the first time that the club has ever had an athlete make it through to a track final in these Championships, where the standard of athlete is incredibly high and all athletes are cheered on by a crowd of hundreds, this year in the Alexandra Stadium, Birmingham.
