Club Championships

A reminder that our fun and informal end-of-season Club Championships is taking place on Saturday 26th September.

Entries are still being taken (via training sessions or email)up to 24th. There is no training on this day and it's your last chance to compete on the track for 6 months so grab the chance while you can.

Open to all members aged 8 years to U17's. See below for more details and entry form.

Throws Area Opening

Our long-awaited throws area next to the track is due to be officially opened on Saturday 26th September at 1pm, during the lunch break of the Club Championships (see above).

This marks the final chapter is a 3 year long quest to be able to offer discus, hammer, shot putt and some javelin throwing in a purpose-built and safe environment.

The club has made a substantial financial contribution towards the facility and we can't wait now to get using it and offering our athletes the chance to throw at long last!

All members are welcome to attend the opening ceremony.

Apologies for Wednesday

On Wednesday 16th Sept the club was put in an embarrassing and awkward situation. The Recreation Group had been previously told to report that Wednesday and following Wednesdays at the Sportshall for their sessions, now taking place indoors in view of the approaching colder and darker autumn evenings.

Unfortunately on arrival, the Sportshall was booked by other user groups and our group of youngsters had to train on the track again (with children and coaches alike not kitted out for outdoor work).

We would like to apologise for the confusion on Wednesday night, a situation which was outside of the clubs control and the error appearing to be on the part of the Rutland Sports Park. This matter is being looked in to.

We will try to update the Recreation Group athletes as to Wednesday 23rd and 30th arrangements as soon as possible via the website and at training sessions.

Mini League Sportshall Athletics

The Sportshall athletics season kicks of with the first match on 27th September. All matches are at Queens Park Leisure Centre, Chesterfield starting at 1.30pm (assemble half hour beforehand).

Other dates are 25th Oct, 22nd Nov (NB this match 10 - 1pm), 13th Dec, 10th Jan, 7th Feb. Further info is being given out at training and is on the noticeboard at the track.

Mini League is open to all AVAC athletes in the U11, U13 and U15 age groups (as of track and field season 2009). Athletes must be at least 9 years on the day.

Last season Derbyshire had probably the most successful all-round team ever at the U13 and U15 Regional and National Finals. Many AVAC athletes were part of the team winning regional and national medals. All athletes had truly fantastic and memorable competitions and had an experience that will probably stay with them for the rest of their lives.

We are currently picking up the buzz of real anticipation towards this season unlike never before; so many can't wait to get doing Sportshall again! Why not make sure that you (or your child gets involved?)

It's so easy to do - turn up, pay £2 entry, tell your AVAC team managers what events you want to do, then run, jump and throw! Taking part is the only way that U13 and U15 athletes can be in with a chance of selection for the county team (must do at least 2 competitions from the 5 available before the team is selected) plus you'll be helping your club to try to regain the Mini League trophies again.

Judy Payling and Nicky Newton will be team managers this year.

Parents - would you be willing to help out on scoring? All offers of help appreciated as the competitions cannot run without volunteers.

NJAL Playoff Match

A big thank-you to all our Athletes & Officials for all their time, effort & money for their great support this season in the NJAL Midland Premier Division.

Unfortunately we finished 7th in the Premier Division & to be fair were beaten by better quality Teams.

So this meant we were involved in the Promotion Play off Match at Moorways where 6 Teams competed for the 2 places on offer to go up to the Midland Premier Division.

Final results from the Play off Match were:

1 Cheltenham & County 534
2 City of Stoke 476
3 Team CDAV 427
4 Derby AC 425
5 Rugby & Northampton 391
6 Tipton Harriers 335

So unfortunately we were beaten by quantity & not quality in this Match, with only a lack of Athletes which cost us.

Next year it looks like being back in the Trent Division!

Entry details are being given out at training and can also be downloaded here.

Not Just Runners!

Lori Marshall, Arran Smith and Aidan Smith entered a team into the Erewash Tri-athlon in Long Eaton at the weekend.

They did a 400m swim, a 10 mile bike ride followed by a 5k run.
Their times were:

Lori – Swim = 9.17, Bike = 33.11 and Run = 19.36 Total Time = 1hr 04min 02sec.

Mini League

Despite winning match 4 of the Derbyshire Mini League on Saturday 8th August AVAC could not retain the overall trophy for another year with Derby AC becoming its keeper until next summer.

Full results are attached here and also here.

Please note that the Derbyshire Athletic Association website www.dcaa.org.uk is experiencing some difficulties and may not be updated for a while.

Selections for the County team for the U13 / U15 Inter-counties match at Nuneaton on 12th September will take place this week and all athletes duly notified via a club rep. All selected athletes must give their availabilities to their club rep immediately.

Further details of this match and the selections will appear on the Derbyshire Athletics website once operational, or on the AVAC website.

AVAC Athletes in Record Breaking Form

It's always good to see our own club records being broken, none more so than those that have stood for several years.

Recent competition has seen just that, starting with the Charnwood Open on 5th August. Ten year old Niamh Emerson had the rare opportunity to run an 800m, recording the time of 2.39.0. This outstanding time for an U11 breaks the existing club record by 9 seconds held by Tamara Armoush since 2002.

Another record to fall that evening, also from 2002, was the U15 boys triple jump. Jacob Smith leapt to a best of 11.14m, adding 6cm to the existing record.

One of the highlights of the Mini League action at Moorways at the weekend was watching the high jump bar in the U11 boys competition go higher and higher. Ben Michell left the opposition way behind as he cleared height after height, eventually reaching his limit at an outstanding 1.34m. This broke the existing club record held by Michael Feeney since 2002 by 14 cm, and the Mini League record by 4cm.

Tom Bridge had a weekend to remember. At Mini League he set a lifetime best in the U15 boys shot throwing over 14m for the first time, breaking his own existing Mini League and club records. He also threw over 37m in javelin to break a further club record (yes another one from 2002!) previously held by Richard Szarkowski.

The day after, at the England Athletics U15 / U17 Championships in Bedford he set a new lifetime best in the U15B discus of 39.14m to finish 5th, breaking his own club record. A little later he made amends for a disappointing show at English Schools where he finished 4th, by taking a silver in the shot put with a best putt of 13.70m to cap a memorable weekend.

GB Debut for David

David Feeney made his international debut at the weekend in the U20/ U23 Combined Events International at Watford. Selected for the GB and NI U23 Mens decathlon team he gave a solid performance over the ten events to finish 5th overall out of 12 athletes, against strong teams from France and Switzerland.

He produced his customary good start to day 1 running a wind-legal pb of 10.94 in the 100m, following that with a further pb of 7.10m in long jump. This placed him first overall. His shot putt of 12.44m caused him to relinquish the lead but he followed this with another pb, this time in the high jump, jumping 1.91m. Finishing day 1 with the 400m he completed the day lying in 2nd place overall.

On day 2 he ran a close pb in the 110m hurdles then a solid 38.70 discus. Still lying in 2nd place overall it was always going to be difficult at this point to maintain his position with two of his weaker events to come. He managed 3.90m in pole vault but a below par javelin of 40.44m caused him to drop to 4th.

Despite a gutsy run in the 1500m of 4.52.32 he finished 5th overall, with an overall points score of 7059, a further pb.

David's performance was enough to see him finish as 3rd best Brit so that his score counted towards the team score, (with 3 out of 4 to score). The GB U23 Mens team won, as did the combined U20 and U23 Mens and women's teams.

National Junior League

Team CDAV, the joint Chesterfield & District AC and Amber Valley AC team, will have to battle for its National Junior League Midlands Premier Division survival in the Promotion Match at Derby on 30 August.

Despite finishing one place higher than predicted in the final match at Cardiff, the team ended the season in 7th place, which earns them the right to have a second stab at avoiding relegation, if they can finish in the top two at Moorways.

The team had to contend with probably the worst competition weather possible - torrential non-stop rain, high winds and cold temperatures. However some of the team managed to produce some good performances despite the conditions. Sadly there were no event winners from the AVAC athletes but Alex Turner achieved two 2nd place finishes in the A string 400mH and the 100mH, the former with a new pb.

Lori Marshall also took a 2nd in the A string 1500m steeplechase. Tamara Armoush earnt valuable points with 3rd places in the 800m and 1500m despite not being fully fit. Jack Elliott made his first competitive appearance for the club this summer finishing 2nd in the Mens 2K steeplechase A string whilst Matt Rimmington had his first outing over the steeplechase barriers, also finishing 2nd, in the B string. Michael Feeney turned his hand to throws to record B string 2nd in discus and 3rd in javelin, whilst Arran Smith took 2nd in the B string shot.

The team was denied good potential points when the pole vault - one of its strongest events - was cancelled on the day, as the landing bed was deemed to be unsafe.

Match result: Birchfield 472, West Wales 465, Nott's 431.5, Charnwood 394, Cannock 388, Team CDAV 368, Cardiff 355.5, Mansfield 345.

Erewash Awards

At the recent inaugural Erewash School Sports Partnership Awards 11 year old club sprinter Megan Bruce won the Erewash Schools Sports Award Primary School Individual Girl for her athletic performances with both Amber Valley AC and Erewash Schools for 2009.

Georgina Trace was one of two runners up in the Primary Girls. Ryan Newton won the Senior boys award for his successes on the track this season.

Congratulations to all.

Parent and Athlete Evening

Parents and athletes are welcome to attend a special Q & A evening on Tuesday 28th July at the Golf Pavilion (at the end of the road past the track on West End Drive) 8.15 to 9pm.

If you've ever wanted the chance to ask a question about your child's training, which competitions to enter, how to get the best from your child, the things you can do to help and so on, now is your chance. Athletes welcome too! Get some advice on competition preparation, dealing with defeat, loosing interest or balancing school and social life.

On hand to answer your questions will be the Derbyshire Athletics Network coordinator Daniel Caines, former Olympic 400m runner and World Indoor Champion, plus your familiar club coaches. You name it, we'll try to answer it! Being a Tuesday athletes should go onto the meeting straight from training with their parent(s).

All welcome, though specifically targeted at those athletes 12years+ who train on Tuesdays and Thursdays and who regularly make our league teams.

Last Chance For Mini League

The fourth and final track and field Mini League is on Saturday 8th August at Moorways 10.30am start. This is your last chance to take part! All ages (9 - 14's) and abilities welcome, novice or experienced.

No special equipment needed, just a club T shirt or vest, pay your £1 and take part. This is one of the last opportunities for local competition before the winter so grab the chance while you can.

Info is being given out at training or download here and also here.

The Derbyshire U13 / U15 team for the annual Inter-Counties Young Athletes match will be selected shortly after this match. To be in with a chance you must show selectors what you can do as athletes will be selected from performances at Mini League and County Championships only.

GB Selection for David

Amber Valleys David Feeney has been picked to be part of the Great Britain and N. Ireland sixteen-strong squad for the Combined Events U20 / U23 International.

The 21 year old will pull on the GB vest for the first time next weekend, 25/ 26th July in the U23 Mens decathlon at Watford. The competition will include teams from France and Switzerland.

David is the first ever Amber Valley athlete to gain a GB selection.

A for Effort for English Schools Quartet

The Amber Valley quartet of Tom Bridge, Tamara Armoush, Michael Feeney and Alexandra Turner had variable fortunes at the English Schools Championships at Sheffield on 10th / 11th July. All four were competing against the very best young athletes in the country.

Tom, competing in the U15 boys shot putt just missed out on a medal, finishing in 4th place with a best putt of 13.30m, half a metre down on his best. Michael Feeney unexpectedly made the final of the senior boys 110m hurdles, finishing in 9th place in the Sky televised race.

Alex failed to progress further than the heats in the senior girls 400m hurdles. However, she added another English Schools medal to her collection, this time a bronze for being part of the Derbyshire senior girls 4 x 100m relay team, along with former AVAC member Emma Komocki, Chesterfields Lauretta Curtis and Charnwood's Jordanne Macintosh.

Tamara Armoush finished 8th, mid-pack in the senior girls 3000m.

Joe Jumps to a Medal

Jumps coach Joe McColgan showed that age is no barrier to athletics success. He won a bronze medal at the British Masters Athletic Federation Championships.

Competing at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham at the weekend he took third place in the 50 - 54 years age group high jump with a best clearance at 1.55m. Joe is no stranger to top level competition. In his youth he represented Northern Ireland internationally in triple jump.

Throws Area Takes Shape

Visitors to the track in recent weeks will surely have seen the work taking place on the land behind the back straight. Our long awaited throws area has really taken shape, followed on Wednesday 10th July by the arrival and erection of the hammer / discus cage.

It shouldn't be long now before our athletes can finally start throwing from the permanent shot circle and hammer / discus cage. Javelin is not quite so well catered for as funding could not be found this time round for a tartan runway, but it is in the plans for phase 2 development.

Our coaches will still be able to lead javelin practice on the grass within the area. The throws area is fully fenced for both security and safety. Look out for details of it's opening date.

Mini League

Matches 2 and 3 in this local league took place on consecutive weekends. As before, it was highly competitive between AVAC and Derby AC, though sadly on both occasions Derby AC pipped us to first place by only a matter of a few points. Some excellent individual performances came about and a pleasing number of PB's too from our young athletes.

In match 2 at Moorways of particular note was Ben Mitchell's easy victory in the U11 boys 150m setting a new club record. Ben also won the high jump, only 1cm off the existing club record for this too. At U13 Jethro McGraw won all three of his events - 100m, 75mH and 1500m, the latter being a Grade 1 performance.

Rounding off a good day for U13 boys on the track George Coutts secured a victory in the 200m. Imogen Cresswell shows steady improvement in the shot by winning the U13 girls event throwing just short of 8m. At U15 Kiera Gee did the sprint double winning both the 100m and 200m, whilst sisters Hazelle and Aimee Ward finished first and second respectively in the javelin in their first javelin competition for the club.

Match 3 moved away from Moorways for the first time in its 9 year history and was hosted by 2DASH at their track in the beautiful surroundings at Mount St Marys College, Sprinkhill. The venue and warm sunny conditions were obviously to many athletes liking as the PB's kept on coming.

Molly Mee set a new Mini League record in the U13 girls 800m running, once again this season, out on her own, with a time that sees her sitting easily within the top 20 times done nationally this season. Jack Allen found form taking the 100m and shot whilst Jethro McGraw had a hat-track of wins in the 75mH, 200m and 800m. Ben Michell doubled again, this time winning the U11 80m and 150m, as did Tom Bridge in the U15 shot and discus.

Full results can be found on www.dcaa.org.uk

National rankings can be found on www.thepowerof10.info

The fourth and final match this season is on 8th August at Moorways. There is no training at the track on this day for athletes in the U11, U13 and U15 age groups as ALL athletes should be taking part.

This is the last competitive track and field opportunity this season for many young athletes so take the chance whilst you can to give it a go. Details will be on the club website, club notice boards and given out at training shortly.

All U13 and U15 athletes have one more chance to record times and distances to be considered for selection for the Derbyshire team for the Inter-Counties match on September 12th at Nuneaton (tbc). Only athletes who have taken part in Mini League and the County Championships will be considered.

It's worth remembering that athletes can be selected even if they have not won their events at Mini League, and trying a range of events could increase the chances of selection.

Success in Solihull

There was much to be pleased about following AVAC's trip to Solihull on Sunday for the second match in the Heart of England League Div 1. Many PB's appeared throughout the course of a warm and sunny afternoon, ideal conditions for most events. The girls, in particular, had a very successful day, topping the league overall on the day for the U13, U15 and U17+womens combined scores.

Unofficially, after two matches AVAC is in 2nd equal position overall (male and female combined), improving from 3rd overall after match 1.

The U13 girls finished 2nd overall on the day. Molly Mees easy win in the 1500m started the day off well. She added a B string win in the 200m. Imogen Cresswell continued her fine run of form with a big pb in the 70mH for 3rd with Chloe Gee getting a B string 2nd. Imogen also took a B string win in long jump, with Megan Bruce claiming a 2nd in the A string with a pb. Imogen also took a 2nd place in the A string 200m with another pb. All four girls combined well together to win the 4 x 100 relay.

The U15 girls made a massive improvement on their first match appearance by winning their age group on Sunday. In fact almost every girl had a finish in the top 3. Of particular note were Kelly-Jay Payling's huge pb in the 75mH winning in a very close race, and Emily Heappey's magnificent win in the 800m taking several seconds off her pb in a distance she hardly races or trains at. Catherine Ross had an excellent day despite being far from full fitness, taking B string wins in shot and long jump and an A string 2nd place in high jump.

Star performers were the combined U17 and Women's team who won their age group on the day. Alex Turner won both the A string 800m and 400m and the B string 100m. Emily Butlin won the high jump, setting a new pb and U17 club record.

Jodie Wills took the A string 100m and Lori Marshall won the A string 1500m and proved she has some useful sprint speed winning the B string 400m. Chloe Smith made a welcome return to the team winning the B string javelin and taking 2nd in the B string shot.

Coaches Judy Payling and Lauren Bestwick proved that they can put theory into practice, Judy winning the B string shot and Lauren taking 3rd in the A string javelin, setting a new U20 club record.

The U13 boys finished in 5th place overall on the day. Star performer in this age group was Jethro McGraw who won the A string 800m and 200m, and took 2nd in the 75mH. Jack Allen won the B string 200m and Rory McColgan finished 2nd in the B string 75mH.

The U15 boys faired a little better, finishing in 3rd overall on the day. James Morley and Dominic Hare both finished in 2nd place in the 80mH, A and B string respectively. Dominic also picked up another 2nd place this time in the A string 400m. Other 2nd places went to Jacob Smith in high jump setting a new pb, Tom Bridge in the shot A string and Jack Newton in the B string.

The U17 men suffered from lack of numbers so unfortunately not all events were covered, but they still managed 4th place overall. Ryan Newton took two 2nd place finishes in the 100m and 200m, whilst Aidan Smith won the B string javelin and Michael Bosworth came 2nd in high jump.

The trio of Niamh Emerson, Lydia Gilliver and Tamsin McGraw finished 2nd overall again in the separate U11 girls match. Niamh had a point to prove in the 600m, beating the Rugby & Northants competitor who had previously won the race in match one, setting a new pb again this time. Tamsin won the B string event.
Ben Michell displayed his potential by winning the U11 boys long jump but had to be content with sharing the fastest time for the 75m with three other boys.

Full results can be downloaded here.

Summer Changes

All athletes and parents should note that registration and payment will now be done trackside during July, August and early September.

All athletes (including Recreation Group ) will be training on the track during this period. Training times and fees remain unchanged.

Michael Follows in Brother's Footsteps

History repeated itself as Michael Feeney won the Senior Boys Decathlon at the Midlands Schools Combined Events Championships, just as older brother David did in 2006. Competing for Derbyshire Schools at the annual fixture, this year at Oxford,

Michael has now secured his place in the English Schools Combined Events Final in September at Bedford, one of only two Derbyshire athletes going through this year.

The 10-event marathon was contested in the gruelling heat and humidity of last weekend. On day 1 he was in the lead after the first 3 events, with solid performances in the 100m and long jump, and a pb in the shot putt. He had to retire from the high jump well below his capability to rest a slight ankle injury and finished in 2nd place by the end of the day, despite running a pb in the 400m.

An interesting and close battle was developing between Michael and Nottinghamshire's Matt Madden, a Nott's AC athlete. After hurdles, discus and a pb in pole vault only 3 points separated the pair. When it mattered most, Michael produced a big pb throw of 41.50m in the javelin and gained a 250 point lead over Matt, who at this point was struggling with an elbow injury.

A steady run in the 1500m in sweltering temperatures saw Michael win by over 200 points with 5236 points.

Michael Bosworth can be pleased with his 7th place Octathlon finish in his first year as an Intermediate (U17). His points total of 3635 was an overall pb, as were his long jump, javelin, high jump and shot putt.

Jessica Turner and Emily Heappey competed in the Junior girls pentathlon for the first time in these championships. Against a quality field Emily finished 13th and Jessica 8th in a close match, with less than 90 points separating Emily from the finisher in 6th place.

Both girls recorded PB's in the first event, 75m hurdles, Jessica surprised herself by jumping 1.42m in high jump, a significant pb, and Emily threw a pb in shot putt and took a good slice off her 800m best.

Fab Four for English Schools

Tamara Armoush, Tom Bridge, Michael Feeney and Alexandra Turner have all been selected to compete in this years English Schools Finals. They are part of a 35 strong Derbyshire team drawn from the county's secondary schools.

All athletes have to have achieved a tough qualifying standard in order to be in with a chance of being selected for the team, and the Finals, this year in Sheffield on 10th and 11th July, bring together to very top young athletes in the country in their age groups.

Tamara will compete in the senior girls 3000m, Tom in the junior boys shot, Michael in the senior boys 110m hurdles, and Alexandra in the senior girls 400m hurdles. Good luck to all.

Scotland Call-up for Feeney

David Feeney has been selected to compete for Scotland in his first overseas selection. He will contest the 110m hurdles at the Flanders Cup as part of the Scotland squad in Belgium on 4th July.

Silver at the Double

Brothers Michael and David Feeney both added silver medals to their collections, after competing in the Northern Track and Field Championships on 20th June at Sport City, Manchester.

Both contested the same event, the 110m hurdles. David took silver in the senior Mens race, followed by silver for Michael in the U20 Mens race.
