October - December 2004
Heart of England Dates
These have now been released for 2005. First fixture is on May 29th at either Dudley or Stourbridge. The other dates can be found on the updated Events page.
Derbyshire Mini League, Cross Country
Sat 11th Dec, Moorways, Derby
Amber
Valley athletes continued their dominance at cross country this season with an
emphatic team victory at the final fixture at Moorways parkland, Derby.
Not only did they take the annual trophy from last years winners, Derby AC, they also won 5 out of the 6 age group categories and had 11 individual medal winners. This was despite having several notable absentees due to injury, illness and unavailability.
Rory
Dickenson was perhaps AVAC's athlete of the day as he took first place in the
U13 boys race. With his consistent performances across the three fixtures ( top
3 finish in each race ) he was also the clubs only overall individual gold
medallist. Team mate Chris Dawe finished second to Dickenson on the day and
silver medallist overall.
Other individual silver medals went to Olivia Pell (U15), and Ricky Kiggins (U15) despite Ricky unable to compete on the day due to a foot injury. Sisters Alexandra (U13) and Jessica Turner (U11) both took home a silver each. Jessica had to be content with another second place finish on the day but safe in the knowledge that she has a further season at U11 to come.
Tamara
Armoush was the expected race winner at U13 but was unable to pick up an
individual medal having given her priority to a previous Reebok Cross Challenge
fixture in November where dates clashed. Similarly, Rob Love at U15 won a close
fought race on the day and took an individual overall bronze medal despite
missing the second fixture in favour of the higher standard competition in
London.
William Dennis has had an unbeaten record over the country so far this season at U11 but his unavailability on Saturday cost him his overall gold, and had to be content with sharing a bronze with team mate David Narborough. Tara Ward (U11) and Leila Armoush (U15) were AVAC’s other bronze medallists.

The chance for club athletes to leave spikes and trackies behind and get
glammed-up in party gear. Yes, the annual 'do' at Belper Leisure Centre was a
great success and celebrated club coaches, officials, administrators, and
particularly the athletes contributions to the club over the past year.
Bob Boyd (Chair) and Julie Feeney (Sec) shared the presentations assisted by
other coaches who had nominated certain athletes for awards. Bob thanked
athletes, parents and club volunteers alike for their continued support over the
past year, high lighted some of the clubs successes and looked to the future,
particularly with the planned track facility at Charles Hill in mind.
Around 30 athletes in the U13 to U17 age groups were presented with certificates
and Standards Grades badges, some receiving the coveted Grade 1's.
Achievement Awards went to one boy and one girl in each age group who it was
judged to have achieved the highest track and field standard during 2004:

North Midlands Cross Country League Sat 27th Nov 04
Match 3 Ashfield School, Kirkby-in-Ashfield
The innocent looking football pitch venue for the third fixture in the North
Midlands cross country league race at Ashfield School, Kirkby-in-Ashfield hid a
demanding course with ploughed farmland and plenty of mud. Our young athletes
coped well with the rough terrain and remain in contention for team and
individual honours come the leagues final fixture in January.
The U13 boys team packed well with 4 runners finishing in the top
10. This gave them first team on the day, and they now have a strong lead of 22
points over their Notts AC rivals, going into the final fixture. Ben Conner
finished in 2nd place, Rory Dickenson
6th, Chris Dawe 9th
and Michael Feeney 10th. Nicholas Rowton came 31st and
Aaron Stoddart, in his first race for the club, 37th.
The U15 boys had similar success. Nathan Alhfors was unexpectedly pushed back into 3rd place but this should still see him in contention for individual success. Team mate Rob Love finished strongly, a fraction behind in 4th place, whilst Ricky Kiggins finished his highest place in this league so far with 9th. Matt Selfe finished 27th .The good team effort ensured that they finished first placed team on the day and have now reclaimed the overall team lead from Mansfield Harriers, with a slender 8 point lead.
Tamara Armoush suffered a rare defeat. A sprint to the finish
just saw the 12 year old just pipped at the line. Despite this she is still a
strong contender to take the individual U13 girl title in January. Team mates
Alexandra Turner and Charlotte Noonan finished in 7th and 10th
respectively putting the team in equal 2nd place overall with
Kettering, both 10 points behind the league leaders Chesterfield. There was also
a strong performance by Leanne Cartledge finishing in 13th place –
her highest so far in her first season with the club. Other runners included
Jessica Riley 19th and Emily Cotterill 29th.
Despite being classed as a ‘fun run’ William Dennis clocked up another emphatic win in the U11’s race, being unbeaten in this event, whilst 9 year old Jessica Turner took full advantage of the small girls field with a dominant run also finishing first, way ahead of her nearest rival.
Club Disco and Presentation Evening.
Sat 4th Dec at 'Sammy's' function rooms, Belper Leisure Centre is the venue for this years presentation evening. Doors open at 7.30pm through to 11.30pm and entry is by ticket only.
They are on sale at training Tues 30th, Thurs 2nd and Sat 4th, and are a bargain at £5 for a family ticket, and £2 for a single ticket.
The night includes a presentation of Standards Grades and certificates and trophies for best athletes. Tickets going fast - don't miss out!
North Midlands Cross Country League Match 3, Sat 27th Nov
A reminder to all cross country runners that the next North Mids league match is this Saturday at Ashfield School, Kirkby-in-Ashfield.
The school is just off the A38 towards Mansfield, turn right onto the B6018 (at junction of the Ashfield pub and the fire station), about half a mile on the right. First race at 1pm.
Contact Jim and Julie Feeney for more details or email us.
Reebok Challenge Event, London
Saturday 20th November was a busy day for AVAC
cross-country runners. Our top trio of Tamara Armoush, Nathan Ahlfors and Rob
Love were in London competing in the highly competitive Reebok X-Challenge event
which attracts top runners from all over the UK.
This is the first year we have had Amber Valley athletes in this series of events and all three did very well. Tamara was 5th in the U13 girls finishing only 16 seconds behind the leader over the 3km course at Parliament Hill. Rob and Nathan were 28th and 33rd respectively in the U15 boys event.
Details of the series of races and full results with photos can be seen on the UKA website
2nd Mini-League X-Country 20th November
The rest of the endurance runners were at Kirk Hallam for the second Derbyshire Mini-League event. Despite being without Tamara, Rob and Nathan, our teams all did very well with AVAC finishing in top spot and extending our already decisive lead over our local Derby and Chesterfield friends.
In the U11 girls Jessica Turner finished second closely followed by Tara Ward and Rosie Blount in 3rd and 4th place. Well done also to Jenny Lockwood and Lorna Glen.
William Dennis continued his domination of the local U11 x-country scene with a fine win. William is now undefeated in all 4 mini-league and North Mids races this season. David Narlborough finished in 5th place.
The U13 girls were lead by Alex Turner in 3rd place followed by Jessica Riley and Leanne Cartledge in 6th and 7th place with only a second between them. We also had Emily Cotteril and Roseann Pell in 12th and 14th position.
In the U13 boys AVAC took the first 4 places with Ben Conner leading, followed
by Rory Dickenson, Chris Dawe and Michael Feeney. Only 6 seconds separated all 4
runners ! Nicholas Rowton also ran finishing 16th.
The U15 boys were without Nathan and Rob but still managed to win 1st team place with Ricky Kiggins finishing 2nd only 1 second behind Derby’s Tom Lawrence. Andrew Szarkowski and Matt Self were 5th and 6th followed by James Dennis in 12th.
Our U15 girls duo of Olivier Pell and Leila Armoush were 2nd and 3rd
Overall team positions after 2 matches are:-
1st Amber Valley 136 points
2nd Derby 244
3rd Chesterfield 264
4th Heanor 347
5th Kirk Hallam 379

Success for Amber Valley U11's Sportshall Athletics again.
Several of our club
athletes were part of the Borough Sportshall Athletics team that competed in the
'Fun in Athletics East Midlands Final' at Grantham on Saturday 13th November.
The team of 15 boys and 13 girls were selected from their performances at school
cluster competitions held in Alfreton, Belper, Heanor and Ripley. The team is
coordinated by AVBC Sports Development Unit with considerable support and
assistance from club coaches.
The boys team kept their largely unbeaten record over the years by coming out on top against 4 other teams. The girls were kept to a very close second place.
Well done to those existing club athletes who were part of the team - William Dennis, Rosie Blount, Katie Vaughan, Emily Butlin, Tara Ward, Jessica Turner, Matthew Paget, Kelly-Jay Payling, Issie Webster, and especially to Lorna Glenn who stepped in at late notice to cover for illness.
ECCA Cross Country Relays Berry Hill Park, Mansfield 6th November 2004
The English Cross Country Relays is a real favourite with our middle distance group and Saturdays event did not disappoint! With it’s fast course, scenic woodland setting, excellent event organisation and interesting vantage points for enthusiastic supporters, it attracts a high standard of athlete from clubs all over the country.
Nathan
Ahlfors proved to be AVAC's star athlete. He anchored the U15 boys team to 7th
place overall at this annual Championships, held at it’s traditional home of
Berry Hill Park, Mansfield. Rob Love gave the team a good start with a powerful
run on the first of the three 2K legs. Ricky Kiggins on the second leg turned in
a solid run to hand over with the team in 16th place overall. It was
then left to Nathan to carve his way through the field, picking off runners as
he went, coming home 7th team out of 71, much to the delight of the
AVAC athletes, parents and coaches. The time for his leg put him equal 9th
in the prestigious Top 10 of the fastest runners in his age group on the day –
out of 230 lads!
Just
missing out on the Top 10 in her race was Tamara Armoush. Like Nathan, she
anchored her U13 girls trio, recording the 12th equal fastest leg
time. Alex Turner ran a sparkling first leg, handing over to Charlotte Noonan in
8th place. Charlotte ran a brave leg but couldn’t avoid slipping down
several places against top class opposition. Tamara chased back the places
bringing home her team in 12th place overall. Our girls ‘B’ team
consisted of first-timers at this event but the trio of Emily Rowe, Jessica
Riley and Leanne Cartledge coped well with the big occasion and came a
respectable 48th, despite all having another year left this age
group.
The
U13 boys ‘A’ trio of Rory Dickenson, Chris Dawe and Ben Conner finished an
excellent 18th place out of 64 teams. The boys ‘B’ team of Michael
Feeney, Jordan Martin and Nicholas Rowton finished in 48th position.
Also taking part and enjoying the occasion were Leila Armoush, Katie Noonan, Olivia Pell (U15) and Louise Feeney, Rebecca Herring and Samya Armoush (U17).
2nd Sportshall Match
The second Sportshall Match was held on Sunday
7th November. Once again it was a closely competed match with Chesterfield just
beating us to first place with 337 points. Amber Valley came an excellent second
with 319 points. (We were short of two scoring relay teams which could have
given us the extra 20 points we needed to win.)
27 dedicated athletes turned up to compete for the Club, some had competed the
previous day in Cross-Country and some U11 had been at squad training in the
morning. Thank you to all those who took part.
Congratulations to Charlie Waterhouse who set a new record for U11B 1 Lap of
9.9secs. Also to Claudia Rogers with a new record in the U13G Standing Long Jump
of 2.28m.
In the new U13 Speedbounce, AVAC athletes set the standard and opening records.
Emma Komocki out-bounced the rest of the field with an impressive 87 and Michael
Feeney has set the record at 79 for the boys.

Derbyshire Mini League Cross Country Match 1, Sat 23rd October
Several days of heavy rain
made the Charles Hill course tough going for all the Counties young cross
country runners. The rain held off fortunately during the races, enabling an
entertaining and rewarding start to the league for the club.

AVAC had athletes finish in the top 3 in each of the 6 scoring races, finished in first team place in 4, and are comfortably in the lead in the overall placings.
The boys had a clean sweep of individual victories starting with a comfortable win after a well-paced race by 10 year old William Dennis in the U11’s race.
The closest race of the day
came in the U13 boys. It turned out to be
a
two horse race between Chris Dawe and Rory Dickenson, Chris setting the pace
from the start with Rory happy to keep on his heels throughout the 3K course. In
the end it came down to a sprint finish in the final 50m with both lads awarded
the same finishing times, Chris judged to have pipped his team mate on the line.
In the U15 boys race the
AVAC trio of Nathan Ahlfors, Rob Love and Ricky Kiggins dominated the race in,
by now, very muddy conditions. The trio led the race from the front, Nathan and
Rob running neck and neck for much of the way until Nathan made a
surging
break with 1 lap to go which Rob couldn’t respond to. Finishing one, two, three,
the team win was undoubtedly going to be theirs.
Keeping the clubs winning streak going was Tamara Armoush in the U13 girls race, where she saw off the challenge of regular Chesterfield rival Abbie Vernon for the second time in a fortnight.
In the other girls age
groups AVAC had to be content with good runs
for
second places from Jessica Turner in the U11’s and Olivia Pell in the U15’s.
An U9’s non-scoring fun run was included in the proceedings ensuring that even the youngest runners could experience cross country and get just as muddy as their older team mates!
The second race in the 3-match series is on 20th November at Ilkeston where all the clubs runners will be looking to strengthen their excellent individual and team positions.
Many
people contributed to the smooth running of the event. Jim Feeney and his band
of helpers constructed a safe and challenging course around the Charles Hill
fields. They also marshaled the course during the races. Hot drinks to keep out
the cold were provided courtesy of Wendy, Berni and Linda.
Huge thanks go to everyone who helped to make this annual event such a big success.

Mini League Kicks Off at Home
The first of 3 Derbyshire Mini League Cross Country fixtures takes place on Saturday 23rd October and it's being hosted by AVAC at Charles Hill.
There are races for U11, U13 and U15 girls and boys. Athletes should be aiming for good performances to be in with a chance of individual and team medals by the end of the final fixture in December. U17's can also guest and we hope to have a non-scoring U9's race (for those aged 8 and below) as well.
First races start at 11am. £1 entry payable on the day.
There is normal club training wherever possible from 10am to 12pm for those who don't wish to race. Please note that a change of footwear would be sensible for those who might compete and go into the sportshall.
Parents ... if you are able to help us host the event please get in touch with Jim Feeney at training or by using the website email address. We need:
-
Course constructors 9 - 10.30am (old clothes, wellies and a mallett would be useful. Experience not needed)
-
Course marshals for during the races
-
Refreshments helpers (making hot drinks from the kitchen).
Sportshall Match 1 - Sunday 10th October
Despite the change of time at such short notice, 22 of our athletes turned up for the first match. The short numbers meant that we came in second to Chesterfield but only by just 13 points! (Chesterfield 308, AVAC 295).
Special mentions go to Charlie Waterhouse and Josh Cartledge. Charlie was the only U11 boy, scoring in all his events but excelling in the 2-Lap to set a new record of 19.8seconds. Josh matched the U15 record in the 2-Lap with a time of 17.8 seconds.
Well done and thank you to all those who competed - a good start to the season.
Full results can be found on the DCAA web-site now.
Sponsorship - Marathon
To date 22 athletes have returned their sponsorship forms and raised a staggering £520.50. Well done to you!
On the day around 60 athletes took part in the event, so where are all of your sponsor forms? It's still not too late to return them, and every little raised will go towards our new track.
First North Midland X-Country League, Markeaton Park 9th October
A total of 28 Amber Valley athletes competed on a pleasant sunny autumn day at the first North Midland X-Country League at Markeaton Park in Derby on Saturday 9th October.
This league comprises 4 races between October and January and includes most of the major clubs in the Notts/Derbyshire/Leicestershire/Lincs area. Overall we had the best start to the season yet with very strong individual and team performances.
We pretty well dominated the younger age groups and were certainly the best performing local club in the younger age ranges. We have always had a strong endurance group of younger athletes but this is the best start to the x-country season we have ever had in our 5 year history. This was despite the unavailability of some key athletes showing that we really are now beginning to develop some strength in depth as well.
The U13 boys finished
in first place with excellent performances from Ben Connor (2nd), Rory Dickenson
(4th) and Chris Dawe (5th) all finishing within 7 seconds of each other - a
really impressive team performance. The team finished 14 points ahead of the 2nd
placed team (Notts). This is particularly impressive as both Ben and Chris are
in their first season as U13's.
Not to be outdone, the U15 team also finished first on the day with a strong run by Nathan Ahlfors to finish a close 2nd, Rob Love (5th) and the versatile Ricky Kiggins (10th). The overall team position here is much closer with only one point separating Amber Valley from 2nd placed Mansfield so we should have an exciting series of races ahead.
In the U13 girls event Tamara Armoush From Belper had a comfortable individual victory despite suffering from a cold confirming what a talented distance runner she is with Alex Turner finishing a strong 7th and Charlotte Noonan 19th. Overall the team finished in 3rd place but with only 3 points separating Amber Valley from the leaders (Chesterfield) the league competition is very open.
In the U11 fun run event the very promising William Dennis in his x-country debut for Amber Valley won the race with Jessica Turner following in her older sisters footsteps as the 2nd girl home. There were also strong performances from Rosie Blount (4th girl), Tara Ward (5th girl) and newcomer Amy Carter (16th girl). This all shows the future of distance runner for the Amber Valley youngsters looks secure. We do need to get more U11 boys competing though - where are you all ??
If anyone who did not compete has a yearning to do x-country - go see Jim at a training session. Don't forget, if you want to compete to the best of your ability in this kind of event you really need to be doing regular endurance training and should consider the Thursday sessions if you do not already attend. You can see from these result just how effective this group is.
